Julio Mediavilla (Valladolid, 1964) initiated its trajectory in the nineties alternating the sculpture and the installation fruit of its investigation on the concept of matérica confrontation and empty space, using as elements iron, stone, water and crystal. This way it arose Borders (1991 – 1993).

In 2002 (you give Me heat, 2002) it begins to experiment with the electricity and the thread of incandescent nicrón incorporating the heat, the light, the movement and the sound into its new proposals.

From this moment more complex facilities arise technically; while its work is losing fisicidad. Also secuenciados incorporates of gradual form texts, signs and incandescent symbols. They retire in Automaton (2003), incandescent Time (2005 – 2007) and Dogma (2008)

It recovers constructive concepts already used as previous works as the fragment and modular structures, now projected to a monumental scale. With Polarizador (2010) the work invades the space and the sculpture transforms in ephemeral architecture.

With Intro (2011) it recaptures the recycled industrial object, integrating the digital photo in the sculpture, provoking by means of a visual conflict, a narrative speech on the coercion of the individual before the perversion of the system. On Stock market (2012) it incorporates the video as plastic and conceptual element, projecting text and audio on the sculptural piece, contributing a speech that synthesizes and determines the current social stage.

At the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014 it attacks the installation In-Out assuming the text and the word as if there were other materials more with which it composes the installation. There incorporate these texts as aphorisms (like authentic mantras) that invite to reflect in the different violence spaces on the fear, the lie, the pain or the exclusion.

In-Out is an installation that one can see until March 9 in the Municipal Room of Exhibitions of the Theater Caldron of Valladolid.

The artistic installation is a genre of the contemporary art that begins developing in the 60s. One of the characteristics is that the artists use the space of the proper exhibition to incorporate it into its installation. Namely that generate an idea according to a space in particular. Other of the fundamental features in the installation is the action of every individual who activates the message. With it one achieves that the spectator takes part in the installation. In In-Out the installation consists basically of three elements. On the one hand, a line of red color with a few letters «not to penetrate the red line» or, simply, «not to penetrate» that surround the whole perimeter of the space. We are inside the installation (we have penetrated the line – look out!-). On the other hand four modules, cylindrical, constructed with irons of polypropylene (polymer thermoplastic, partially crystalline) joined by means of "mosquetones" and that are opened to be located in its interior, an interior that it is bathing for a cold light. In the soil, the third element of this installation is located. It is a question of a circular text (on rubber) and that it is possible only to read once we have been located in its interior. It is in this moment, when you are placed inside this closed space, when you are a participant of the installation on having read the message, the aphorism, the mantra that is there. It is not a space that protects you, but it is a place where the intestines move you on having metabolized the phrase. There are four:

to submit distributing pain and accumulating power

to exclude forcing the limits of the instability

fear that annuls all possibility of answer

comforting and soothing lies

Phrases that have to do with the pain, the exclusion, the fear and the lie. Julio Mediavilla has incorporating this type of messages in its work. This is what it usually name like a «awkward type», sensitive and in contact with the current world. Any of these four phrases is served by them for ambientarnos, to recognize in them faces or situations of the people who lives in a social situation that is not precisely enviable, but everything opposite. In this case, in In-Out, Mediavilla plays with the words and with the gap, inviting us to penetrate into every cubicle to see as «the phrases float» around ours.

The artist, in the presentation of the installation, he emphasized the role of the exclusion. Scarcely the exclusion did not account us and he has settled in the life of the citizens. It is the exasperating state to which an individual can come, for the instability in the way of life.


With this sample, continues the cycle of exhibitions selected in the last call of local artists that every year realizes the Municipal Foundation of Culture of the Town hall of Valladolid, in which they could present themselves, creators of our city. The Town hall of Valladolid continues in this line, and in the next months the vallisoletanos will be able to see the work of new local artists selected in the last call, with the innovation that some of them they will be able to be also present in the European exhibition of the Project CreArt, led by Valladolid.
