Valladolid. Exhibition Homage Micaela Flores Amaya, the Joke

Micaela Flower Amaya (Marseilles, 1938) presented the past 18 in the cloister of the Palace Pimentel, head office of the Delegation of Valladolid, a collection of paintings that constitute a sample of its art and a small homage to its figure.

Do not call her Micalea, because he does not attend; its name is that its parents put him of kidling and of the one that feels very proud: Joke («it is that of teeny-weeny, it was mu ugly, mu black woman, mu small a thing»). Joke has demonstrated to have art great, has been able to be unrolled by the stages with its Flemish art. He stood out for being bailadora and there was no soirée that was not provided with its presence.

The sample receives a series of works distributed by the broker of the first plant of the cloister. They are going to say to me that I am crazy if I say that what does the Joke has to do very much with Pop Art. But at once we will see that the proposal is not so ludicrous. For it I send myself to the definition that of this movement I did in our publication in the number 20 of Magazine Atticus (page 9 and centuries):« the pop art (Pop Art) is an important artistic movement, arisen at the end of the fifties of the XXth century, in England, although its extract is necessary to look for it in the United States. The main characteristic is the use of taken images of the popular culture … The art stops being exclusive to turn into a consumption object». Namely that sends us to a folk art and turns into consumption object. And these two conditions happen in the work of the Joke. Its works are an artistic declaration that gathers a popular tradition that turns on the folklore of the Fleming and of the gypsy world. Continuing with my adventurousness, I offer the comparison of two works: on the one hand an icónica of the movement Pop Art (illustration 1) and for other the emblematic one in the work of the Joke (illustration 2). Both repeat the same motive, both are characterized by the use of living colors. You judge same and extract its opinion. The work of "Marilyn" and the work of the flowers of the Joke they have very much in common.

But also it is very true that if with some movement we have to identify and frame the work of the Joke it would be the style naïf. Nobody can deny the absence of both technical and theoretical knowledge in the work of the Joke. This ignorance provides to its works a big ingenuousness in its exposition and making, and leads him to executing its works without a strict criterion in the cánones of the proportions. This is its style: graceful, happy, with the flat use of a few colors and the repetition of motives and without subjection to a definite perspective. Namely that paints what he wants, is an emotive art, goes out for him of inside as its art goes out for him at the time of jumping to the tablao, without abiding by any norm. Gypsies, guitarists, flowers, bailaoras, robes of tail and Crucifixes parade its linens full of grace, plasticity and of sensibility. With the dance with its barefooted feet it dazzled to the world (it attracted artists as Dalí), now it is its soul the one that undresses to offer us these paintings. A woman who turned into the geniuses muse like the proper Dalí, Picasso or Alberti.

«The work of “The Joke” reveals once again that the simple thing and “what goes out of inside” is the really beautiful thing.

The works of this gypsy painter are to the sale for a few reasonable prices. It delighted the assistants to the opening with this another art that goes inside. Scarcely he can dance because like itself he has confessed: "a lung cancer is taking the air from me and scarcely I can dance because I suffocate». Scarcely there were a few steps, a few flutterings, but it left stamp of its Fleming. Now on the walls of these walls loaded with history they hang a few ingenuous linens, jesters full of coloring. I quite am sure that in these linens there where it puts Joke it puts another name, we would be speaking about another thing. Who puts price to the art: What is art or it is not? There are questions extensively debated. There is one to feel not writing popular: or you like or not you like. But the true thing is that to approach a work of art and to know it is closer to the knowledge and helps us to form an opinion.
