In Crossing of ways (The pleases beyond the pines), a mysterious and mythical pilot of motorbikes, Luke (Ryan Gosling), goes out of the ambulant carnival Globe of Death and covers like a beam the alleys of Schenectady (New York) looking desperately for an ancient lover, Romina (Eva Mendes), who secretly has just given birth to its son. In an attempt of maintaining its new family, Luke leaves its life in the carnival and commits a series of armed robberies to banks making use of its incredible skill with the motorbike. Everything is complicated when in Luke's way there crosses an ambitious official of police officer, Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper), who thinks about how to climb quickly in a police department full of corruption.
Ways crossing is a history of three lives that cross in a certain point. Three lives with three intense histories (each of them well might constitute a movie).
Luke (Ryan Gosling) is a man somewhat alienated by the society from whom practically he is autoexcluded. Tattooed up to the marrow and raised without a father, it is a rompecorazones and he tries to make the living with what easily he can do: you pirouette with a motorbike in an ambulant circus. With its erratic life it coincided one night with a woman, Romina (Eva Mendes). After one year Romina and Luke meet again trying to prolong that romance. Luke finds out that it has had a son with Romina. What future can it offer to its son? Be which is he wants to interfere in its life (Romina is with another man), to be with the child so that there does not happen to him the same that to him: the neglect. To be able to be next to you he does not hesitate to leave the circus and be employed at a workshop of mechanical repairs. The proprietor of the workshop offers him work, bed and a future in the shape of holding banks up and going out fleeing with its skill on the motorbike.
Avery Cross is a raw police officer and he is a son of a judge. It comes with its car to chase a delinquent who flees to any machine. The one that crosses in its way is not different that proper Luke. A dramatic event will mark the life of the agent.
Luke, Romina and Avery three lives that conclude in a point that it will transform not only its own lives but those that take the same blood.
It is not convenient to reveal the reason but the structure, this dramatic draft, of ways Crossing there has a peculiarity that does it that it is different to what we are used to seeing on the big screen. It is a point of surprising inflection for unusual. This history is counted in three parts. That one first that we have seen in that Luke tries to make the living. The second one of the adventures is whom it takes as a protagonist to Avery, the police officer who came across with Luke. The later events and how is it necessary to face to this dark side of the department of police officer at which it is employed it is the development of this plot. And the last part is that in the one that we see, after a jump in the time of fifteen years, the evolutions of our personages in which the children of both protagonists have joined: AJ and Jason.
The starter of the movie puts you in situation. It constitutes the whole stylistic exercise. We go behind Luke, following its steps, with the camera in its nape. The camera not of to move (camera to the shoulder) what transmits a worrying sensation to us, of tension (to me, personally it extracts me of my pigeonholes and I do not like anything that camera movement is evident so much). After this worrying starter there happen of linear form three histories that it will include fifteen years in the life of the protagonists being the role of Eva Mendes (Romina) the one that agglutinates the different plots.
Ways crossing is a realistic movie, which has to do with the human relations; of what we are and what is the legacy that we can leave to our children and how do they receive it. Two different men have hit and seemingly they have nothing in common. One orphan, vagrant, another son of a judge, with a well-off life. And its children? How do they receive this heredity? The connection that joins them is that they have a son of only a few months and that they have to take a decision to extract forward its family. This topic of the human relations and the connection that there can have between themselves nations who do not know each other already has been seen by us in big movies like Crash (Paul Haggis, 2004) or Babel (Alejandro González Iñárritu, 2006). On this one occasion the director Derek Cianfrance centers more in how the emotions can determine our acts and the consequences that these will have facing not very distant future, reverberating in the future generations. Cianfrance already demonstrated very good ways in its previous movie (Blue Valentine, 2010) obtaining very good criticism. It is no wonder that with credit now has tackled this "risky" proposal of the one that many people correct of careerist and of long duration. For me they do not represent any debit the length excess. Everything is necessary to take it calmly, can be that the director recreates in some passage more of the account, can, but the spectator also has to have its moments of disconnection to assimilate everything what offers us this brilliant proposal.
The share-out is headed by Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes. Gosling is turning into banner of the independent movies. In the two of its last interpretations (Blue Valentine, 2010 and Drive, 2011) it dazzled to the criticism. Lately Cooper, is an assiduous one to the big screen. He is making use of the pull of its recent successes. Guaperas but with talent interpretive as its partner of repart Eva Mendes in a role where it shines more for its performance than for its physicist (the poor person does not go out not favored at all with so much drama). The secondary ones accompany very well. They stand out Ray Liotta although we him we see again in the role malote of corrupt police officer. To continue, it is the performance of young Dane DeHaan in its Jason's role (Luke's son). With its interpretation and its silences it seems to continue the career of its father of fiction (Gosling). Also there deserves our attention the performance of Ben Mendelsohn (Robin), like Luke's associate. A being who seems to be hung the whole day, but who demonstrates to be very ready and to be able where there is the red line that it is not necessary to penetrate. Of its mouth the indicative phrase goes out: "If you run like the beam … you will smash like a thunder».
There reminded the sound-track to that of Crash. Consulted its author, Mike Patton, did not have any reference but to what I listened I liked, because it was not standing out very much. Outstanding the last topic that it passes to the qualifications of credit interpreted by Bon Iver.
Ways crossing is a brilliant proposal narrated with office and very much I spoil. Its director risks and not to be important for him to spoil the laws of the game after offering anything worthy and that goes out of the norms of the big mammoth productions hollywoodenses. Which is of being grateful. This tear tattooed in the face of one of the protagonists is a detail that defines the whole personage. Sadness and pain but also the ambition for the survival. Revenge, love, hate and honor cross the way of the movie of Derek Cianfrance whom we have already raised definitely to the shelf of my favorite directors.
