Exhibition of photos of Vivian Maier in Valladolid

Autorretrato

Self-portrait

Wrapped in mystery, the history of Vivian Maier belongs to those that it finds it hard to believe.

We know at least 100.000 negative - great ones still without revealing - that show us how and what was looking, but little more.

Babysitter for 40 years, American of franco-Austro-Hungarian origin, without friends or family, Vivian Maier died poor and alone in 2009, in the most absolute anonymity, until by hazard its negatives were found inside a closet, in an auctions house, when John Maloof bought it without suspecting the treasure that he was hiding.

For the first time in Europe, Benito de Valladolid presents to himself in the Municipal Room of Exhibitions of san until July 8, 2013 a sample of the photos of Vivian Maier, the babysitter that at present it captivates to the whole world with the photos that it received spontaneously, and that now unanimously are considered to be one of the marvels and more interesting peculiarities of the photo of the «urban America» of the second half of the XXth century. The legacy of this enigmatic figure has turned into a genuine surprise for the specialists, who are present astonished at an enormous photographic Corpus Christi provided with a modernity, personality and quality unusually for the years and the circumstances in those that it was conceived.

Maier was not revealing its spools, it was not possible to allow it. Only he was taking pictures without rest in its moments of free time, and without seemingly the final result mattering for him. One speculates on its shyness, and there seems to personify the stereotype of one member of the domestic service; that is to say, a person who is present in moments very intimate and deprived of the life of other persons maintaining the tact and being able to happen unnoticed but, nevertheless, observing everything what it spends around him.

Perhaps be the this one of the motives that they have provided to its photos of a calm and passive look, without personal pretensions. They were living it seemed to be in all the suitable moments. In its photos we see children, beggars, marines, businessmen, women of the high society, shopkeepers of quarter. Persons of any condition and age of the cities of New York and Chicago.

Also I photograph historical buildings that were knocked down to open way to the progress and the growth of the city. These portraits of its epoch allow us to perceive clearly the spirit of the authoress, contemplative of its society from the distancing with everything what surrounds it.

Of all these artistic documents of the United States and its «urban mythology», the self-portraits of the authoress attract attention powerfully. Maier never put himself in front of the target, like the rest of its models, but it was she who was even photographed itself in the reflex of mirrors, in the sheen of business shop windows, in in the shade that it was projecting in the lawn of the park.

This curious way of appearing in its photos gives us tracks of its personality. Vivian Maier was never in a direct way in the stage, its presence was watched, the tact and the withdrawal were essential part of its life. The study was always self-educated, its evolution and improving of the skill only it was she who was interested in itself, in a long process for autodescubrirse and be known that the whole life occupied him. Across the mirrors the photographer appears, in a gallery of reflexes that blurs its identity and that, at the same time, gives us diverse perspectives of this unknown of the photo.
