Synopsis

Dean and Cindy form a young marriage. Dean is pulling with any work that arises while it deals with the kidling, Frankie. Cindy is a nurse and both crave in the care of its daughter. After six years of relation, the crisis arises: of a few idyllic beginning it passes to a situation in which the apathy seems to have settled in the hearth. Dean wants to recover the illusion and proposes to Cindy to spend one night out of the hearth, in a thematic hotel where the option that they choose is the Room of the future. Past, present and future of a relation.

Comment

Blue Valentine lands in our country with almost two years of delay from its premiere in the United States. It is necessary to throw the sight behind in the newspaper archives to see that it is preceded by the guarantee of a few nominations different awards and in different categories. He emphasizes the nomination to the best actress on the part of Michelle Williams (Cindy) and the good reception that it had in the Film festival of Gijon (also in Toronto and Sundance).

In Spain it appears with the subtitle of a Love story (just in case we had left some doubt of its content).

I do not believe that it is quite invented in the movies. Therefore it is not an original movie (and less treating about the vicissitudes for which they happen the equal protagonist). But it is of being grateful that the director jumps the habitual thing to offer a product that seems to spoil the traditional scheme of exposition, knot and ending (further on it will try to clarify that one it "seems", but I already move forward that this classic structure is supported).

Blue Valentine raises the relation of a couple for space of six years. Its beginnings, its zenith and its decline. There are innumerable the movies that raise the life in couple. Dean (Ryan Gosling) is a charming man. It did not finish its studies, it is somewhat immature, good-natured and affectionate that is a father by force but trying to do the best thing that can. One jumps the habitual conventions to be more friend than father in the relation with its daughter. It is not important for him to live of those works that are going out to the step for him. Cindy (Michelle Williams) is attractive, nice, vitalist and a brilliant student. In its way one crosses "legs" which delight takes root in the muscles. It coexists with its parents in a hearth where long ago the love changed to pass to the screams, disdain and violence. The Dean's arrival in Cindy's life is a happiness breeze, it is the princely love.

Derek Cianfrance directs this movie after having written and re-prepared the script during almost a ten years. It raises the relation with a proposal in which it alters the facts by means of flashbacks. It gives us the information altering the chronological order of the same one. For it I rest on a series of technical resources (as it is the fact of rolling the past with a 16 mm camera., and the present with a digitalis; the use of different framings of the scene: short planes for the present, planes more opened for the past, where the relation is not so suffocating; and the employment of different tonalities in the scenes). The result of all this, with the temporary ellipses, is devastating. Fruit of it Blue Valentine shows us a relation of the protagonists that proves sobrecogedora. It is something like throwing the sight behind, to your joint past, when you are trying to avoid the separation A putting on the table of these photos of your crazy love. Where has our love stayed? And as he says the song of Supposed implied: How have we changed? There are two young souls that tune in at first as they make it most of the couples. They are beginning a conversation and are giving a revision for its tastes. In the end they realize that music, them joins dances and pranks. But that that joins them in the end will finish with being separated by it to them. And a movie that started in a strange way, which was not allowing us to place each one in its situated one, for this chronological alteration, in the end everything has just fitted and we see as it begins, it develops and finishes a relation. We assist in the end to the decline, the chaos, the pain personified in two young people that the bad only thing that they have done is to live through the life with negligence. The happy yesterday passes to a dramatic present and to an uncertain future. A bloody drama in which the presence of third scarcely is substantial. There are no faults to be thrown to an interfering, to an infidelity. It is the agony, of natural form, although slightly premature, of a relation. The love became exhausted. They become unable to recover the passion and the life filled with tedium, lack of appetite and melancholy with the nostalgia of the beautiful one to live.

Blue Valentine has enough virtues. One of them, its biggest assets, is the excellent interpretation in the roles of Cindy and Dean. We saw Michelle Williams in movies as Brokeback Mountain (Ang Lee, 2005) and My week with Marilyn (Simon Curtis, 2011) who, together with this one, was nominated in three occasions for the Oscars (in the first one as supporting actress and others as better actress). And we could have enjoyed Ryan Gosling its performances in several and recent movies like The idus of March (Stephen Meyers, 2011), Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011), Lars and a girl really (Craig Gillespie, 2007), or the already very distant one The newspaper of Noa (Noah Calhoun, 2004). So much one as other one, go carrerones that go. Its performance in Blue Velentine, is convincing, emotive and believable. Of a way or other one many will be seen (we will meet) painted the portrait in some of these phases by those that a relation crosses. Cindy is the one that takes the singing voice with its decisions. Verisimilitude transmits us with its suffering, with its black's putting on target of the doubts that attack it. It sees that its sleep goes not to expire for this way and he does not want to repeat in its house what happens in the hearth where it grew up. In the end it is necessary to think that it is honest and does not want that Ryan turns into this ominous being who ill-treats its mother. Pero Ryan, with its performance, him does not go to the rear. It proves to be brilliant and haughty in the varied records. From the humor, to the anger, from the tenderness up to the anger. Big performance of the couple that denotes a good chemistry.

And other one of the things outstanding is the metaphor of the room of the future. Big wise move. With a staging in blue tone the protagonists want to recover the love in this room where everything is aseptic, cold, artificial. The contario to the passion. With that everything is said. Also there is a pair of outstanding scenes. One of them is when Dean touches an ukulele species and she dances, this way to dry stick, a species of tap dancing. Delightful. Other one is everything what it surrounds to the wedding which result is a moment full of tenderness and sensuality. Ah, and in the dramatic side to review the scene in which Cindy comes to the doctor. Terrible.

Michelle Williams as Cindy and Ryan Gosling as Dean in BLUE VALENTINE

My opinion is very favorable in favor of this movie. It has this touch of independent movie, of movie indie, that pleases to the criticism but that not always full you salt. I understand that to many it they is hard, they is slow and, finally unpleasantly. But, sometimes, the life is the one that is and the one that we wanted that it was. There is this a relation in which there are neither good ones nor villains. The director has not fallen down in this Manichaeism. We all go out losing when the love escapes from us between these kisses that we already do not manage to give.

Go to the movies, enjoy even the credit qualifications. In this occasion we are present at the progression of the names accompanied on a few hypnotic musical touches that help to digest what we have just seen. Blue Valentine is a sample of that with a small budget develops a big and beautiful project.
