Lincoln recreates last months of the life of sixteenth president of the United States. The nation is broken by the war and Abraham Lincoln attacks personally a series of measurements directed to finish with the war, to join to the nation, and, especially, to abolish the slavery. But in its way towards these targets it will have to fight and to make respect so that its decisions change the course and the destination of the future generations.
Before centring on the movie, it is convenient to do a small summary (that I had already liked to catch before seeing Lincoln) of the situation in which the United States were in the last quarter of the XIXth century. In contrast to most of the movies that I usually see and that recommend, of general form, not to know practically anything of them, in this case, I consider more than necessary to read these four paragraphs (it is not that it is necessary to be a scholar in the history of the USA. to see it) to guarantee Lincoln's better compression, the movie.
Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865) had like one of the targets to realize during its order, that of ending with the bloody Civil war in which it was plunged the United States. The conflicting edicts were the states of the north (meet as the Union) against the Confederated States of America, integrated by eleven states of the south that had proclaimed its independence in the same moment, March, 1861, in which he swore its charge as president Abraham Lincoln. In this act, in the speech of capture of possession, Lincoln declared like illegal the secession.
The Lincoln's second big target was to abolish the slavery: "Giving freedom to the slaves we assure it to the free ones». It is necessary to bear in mind that only four years earlier, in 1857, the Supreme Court of the United States affirmed on the slaves: "so low that they had not rights that the white man must respect». The president had to prove to be very skillful to extract forward this company since if the war was finished, the South would return to the chamber, with which it would be impossible to come to an agreement to approve the Thirteenth Amendment of the American Constitution (the southern states were not for the work of making the blacks free).
In this warlike background there does not stop being an economic struggle. The north was an industrial area, abolitionist, and the south was agrarian and esclavista. 95 % of the blacks was living in the south, being the third part of the population, while in the alone north they were representing 1 %. On the other hand, the southern army had important partial victories during the first two years of the conflict. In 1863, in Gettysburg, it came across with the army of the Union. After three days of bloody clash the confederate ones were defeated. With which the North had access to the sea and it imposed a blockade for the defeated edict. It was a question of time that was going over to the victory. On November 19, 1863, four months after the Battle of Gettysburg the president Abraham Lincoln pronounced one of its most famous speeches in the National Cemetery of the soldier in the same city. In him, the politician invoked the beginning of equality of the men who had dedicated in its Declaration of Independence to finish with the already famous phrase: "That this nation, God by means of, will have a new freedom birth. And that the government of the people, for the people and for the people it will not eliminate of the Earth.»
Some months after the approval of the Thirteenth Amendment Abraham Lincoln when he was present at a theater function is murdered by an actor and sympathizer with the south, John Wilkes Booth. Booth appeared behind the theater box and shot only one shot at the head of the president at the scream of: "Sic semper tyrannis!” (expression in Latin that it means “this way always to the tyrants”). He fled of the theater to be later depressed. While Lincoln was moved to its house where he died ten hours later. It was April 15, 1865.
Lincoln, the movie, centers on last months of the life of the president of the United States who finished the Civil war (or of Secession) and that abolished the slavery. The movie avoids the battles fields to center almost the whole action on closed, dark, lugubrious spaces, where the words it has a lot of leading role.
Steven Spielberg offers us Lincoln's image across actor Daniel Day-Lewis who will go down in history. A Lincoln who suffers in the domestic thing with its son (he does not want to lose to other) and who scarcely can control its wife; while in the offices it appears like a political animal of slow and convincing speech and that he will not hesitate to border on the illegal thing (buy of votes) to extract forward its project. A Lincoln who shows its darkest side on having used some methods questioned to obtain this votes fistful after a few noble ideals. The interpretation of Day Lewis is magnificent. It personifies a man, authoritarian, intelligent, with a big political instinct, which he suffers for its country (wrapped in a war), for its wife (the irascible, the difficult to contain like First lady and aching mother) and like father (it has just lost two children and the biggest wants to enlist in the army). The performance of the Irish actor constitutes the best guarantee of the movie. He is accompanied by a series of actors who shape one of the best cadres that we could have enjoyed in the recent history of the movies. The role of Sally Field (like Lincoln's wife) is very meritorious, but I do not believe that it gives for any award (unless there is rewarded over other qualities the fact of fattening 10 kilos). On the contrary Tommy Lee Jones (like Thaddeus Stevens) simply embroiders it.
Lincoln turns out to be long, a little weighed by this length excess, but as entertainment product turns out to be notable. Technically it is a wonder. The movie recreates a setting that turns out to be impeccable, with many closed spaces (the majority) sordid, dark with few light of the hand of the photographer habitual Janusz Kaminski in Spielberg movies as The list of Schindler's (1993) . And the sound-track is serene and scarcely there is evident, which constitutes a big wise move, and comes from the hand of already mythical John Williams author of innumerable sound-tracks (from Shark to the saga of Indiana Jones).
In spite of all this technical boasting, of being a movie of Spielberg and of the actors' cadre, I liked more the history than the movie. They turn out to be somewhat discursive and it loses emotion before so many verbiage. It treats about a topic that he excites (the liberation of the slaves) and I am only capable of remembering a scene that it should thrill (and little) as it is the first time that the blacks gain access to the chamber; but in its joint Lincoln it is a good product that offers us a vision of a moment in particular of the history of the United States very shortly (only a few months) but of big relevancy in occurring of the History. In these moments, when I attack this criticism, Barak Obama is swearing the charge as President in its reelection. There are great those who are hoping that it should do many things in this second order this way to go down in history. The case is that Obama has already gone down in history to the being the first black president of the United States of America. And that, to a great degree, perhaps let's have it (the whole Humanity) to owe Abraham Lincoln.
A tráiler (I believe that it is worth it in its original version):
