Synopsis

The Master's degree centers on the life of an American veteran of war, Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) who comes back home after finishing the Second World war. It does not find a place in the society and it is giving bumps until it meets Lancaster Dood (Philip Seymour Hoffman), charismatic leader of The Cause.

Freddie Quell (Joaquín Phoenix) is an American soldier who has taken part in the Second World war. To its return he is an insecure, maniac, depressive and violent being. He lives obsessed with the sex (its answer to the test of Rorschach sees genitals on all the parts) and with the alcohol (it has the virtue of being able to extract alcohol even of the gasoline and prepare a few strange concoctions). He is disoriented and strolls around for the world without fixed course, fleeing of himself because he knows that it has turned into a danger, until philosophical science called The Cause comes across with Lancaster Dodd creative (Philip Seymour Hoffman) of a pseudo. Dodd is a small fraud, a chatterbox, a hypnotist who captivates to its retinue. He tries to go so far as to treat its patients solving its personal problems by means of the exploration of the lives spent by means of a species of retrogression under hypnosis. Next to you it has to the alma mater of The Cause that is not different that its wife Peggy (Amy Adams). An intelligent, dark and manipulative woman.

At the time of facing us to this movie it is necessary to bear in mind the terrible consequences of any armed conflict. One of them is how they affect the soldiers the conflict and how it is necessary to adapt to a life removed from the front when they have been expiring with what has called itself the homeland the duty. It is in this moment of the history when in America there is a realization of the increase of the problems of mental health in the population. In 1946 the Law is dictated on the Mental health and the psychoanalysis as therapy is put into practice. Under protection of these circumstances and with this culture medium the Church (understood like the community of the Christians) also tried to attract its faithful. But also other churches arose you do not christen like assemblies or meetings of citizens congregated in reason of a call. And there it is where the figure arises of L. The Master's degree raises three plot lines. The first one of them is the conditions in which the soldiers return to house after a warlike conflict. It is a very seen topic. There are great the movies that develop that one from that we are in charge our boys to defend our country saying to them that they should behave like animals to come to house and to be a few polite gentlemen. This is what happens to Freddie Quell. Another topic is the birth and development of The Cause of the hand of Lancaster Dodd. And, for last, the third plot line takes root it is the behavior between these two main actors in its relation since the Dodd family receives in its bosom Freddie. Doctor and patient behave like father and son, teacher and pupil, and even like lovers (this route thinly insinuated). Both are needed mutually to complement each other. But both lack a space in the American society of the postwar period.

The American film maker has wanted to produce a homage to John Houston. The big director realized a documentary, Let There Be Light (1946), gathering the difficult return to house of the soldiers. Now a scene of his repeats his almost flat Anderson for plane in The Master. The documentary was late 33 years in be projecting and did it on November 8, 1979 in a retrospective on John Huston [i].

«Less it is more». This is what Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe was formulating for its architecture considered for many like the beginning of the minimalism. Many of its works, curiously created about the years 50-60, like the House Farnsworth in Illinois or the building Seagram in New York there are considered to be masterpieces. The Master's degree loses this masterpiece condition because it has details excess, falls down in the redundancy and goes so far as to bore (in some moment) because its director has not been able to reduce the length, remove what it hinders and center on the fundamental thing.

But also like part of this dichotomy, of this clash that takes place between Dodd and Quell in a great part of the Anderson movie, The Master is a colossal work since it has a big personality. It offers a movies to reflect where it is difficult to come to a conclusion. It raises questions without contributing the answer and that does that the work of Anderson is attractive, is something very nearby to a masterpiece. There is a series of aspects that are there for the reflection. One of them is the story that Dodd as sermon narrates in the wedding of its elder daughter who speaks to us about a domesticated dragon (in allusion to the marriage, but: why not? also like synthesis of proper Freddie) or when Dodd says to Freddie that if it finds a work to which it does not have to serve to anybody one says it (is he saying to us that we all have turned into serfs?).

The esthetics are impeccable. There are scenes of a big formal, almost hypnotic beauty in every framing, with primerísimos and supported planes. Memorable is the handling that does of the camera placing in forefront some element as the support of a chair or a frame of a door that does that we involve ourselves moreover in the scene. An actors' impossible work to forget with a big Philip Seymour Hoffman and a haughty, visceral and heartbreaking Joaquin Phoenix, over everything and of all; accompanied by Amy Adams (a secondary role to which it extracts sheen for the little that appears).

The sound-track is a work of Jonny Greenwood mating in a perfect way to the history and shining with proper light in topics with (worrying) identical strangers and topics with voices of the world of the jazz like Ella Fitzgerald.

The result of The Master of Paul Thomas Anderson (let's not forget that he is one of the most personal directors of the American movies with works like Magnolia, 1999 or ambition Well, 2007) is a notable work that is going to have many followers (those who look for the transcendency and the undecipherable thing) but also it will have its detractors (those who come to the movies like evasion). After an analysis, the movie gains weight for these questions that it raises without specifying the answers. But it had to slim enough to make that one his of «less it is more» and to reach, therefore many adore it, the glory of being a masterpiece. In what group are you framed? Go to the movies.
