A history based on a few real facts. These events begin on November 4, 1979. Iran was plunged in a series of mobilizations that culminated with the overthrow of Sah Mohammad Reza Pahlevi and the consequent establishment of the Islamic Republic. A few militants assault the Embassy of the United States in Teheran being done by the control and taking fifty two members of the American personnel as hostages. In half of the chaos, six employees manage to flee and to shelter in the Embassy of Canada, in the house of the ambassador. Alone is question of time that they discover its absence and look for them and, very probably, to kill them for spies. A specialist of the CIA schemes a plan to extract them of the country. An incredible plan but the only possible plan.
It is said that the fiction overcomes, often, the reality. The true thing is that the stamp «based on real facts» seems to hypnotize the spectators. This not always is synonymous of quality (only there is necessary to lay hands on the publicity board of the dessert of the weekends to realize the quantity of movies that resort to this tag, without coming to a quality minimum).
The movie starts, with big wise move, with a series of news, small video pieces; a few documentary images that together with a voice in off it puts to us in precedents of the convulsed situation of the one that crosses Iran in that epoch. The disturbances began enough before this fatidical November 4 for the interests of the Americans. They culminated with the overthrow of the sah, on January 16, 1979, Reza Pahlevi goes into exile in Egypt, and with the arrival of the Ayatollah Jomeini, on February 1. It is necessary to remember that the Shah Reza Pahlevi came to the power in 1953 by means of a coup d'état supported by the proper Americans.
On November 4, 1979, after a series of movements and riots, a multitude of demonstrators is opposite to the Embassy of the United States in Teheran. Inside a nourished group of personnel questions its own safety. In the end a group of armed militants assaults the embassy. Six employees manage to flee between the multitude to go so far as to shelter in the house of the ambassador of Canada. In spite of the destruction of good part of the awkward documents, the intelligence of the USA. knows that it will be a question of time that they locate to the fugitive six and execute them for spies.
They begin scheming a plan to extract them of the country. But the militia, the brutal and merciless militia, does not have any objection in executing all the friends or collaborators of the ancient diet. The plan has to be very good or it will be a death sentence.
But, once again, the American intelligence stays in doubt. They are not capable of meeting on an effective plan. The one that has more options of going out forward is of extracting them as if there were a few cicloturistas and to loins of its bicycles, after covering more than 500 km, coming to a friendly country and returning them to America. A madness. The figure of a specialist arises in rescues, Toni Mendez (Ben Affleck) who designs a less bad plan. He would move up to Teheran and with false passports it would return with six diplomats as if of a team of Canadian filming it will talk each other. They would have been visiting the country to locate location to realize an aliens' movie: Argon.
«All the ideas are bad, it is a question of finding the best». This is of what he quite is sure Toni Mendez. From here on, it gets overturned in its idea and tries to convince its Superiors. For it he does not hesitate to interfere to the maximum and create offices, storyboards, cartels, scripts, etc. That is to say. Everything necessary to begin rolling Argon and this way being able to cheat the Iranian authorities.
Argon reports a convulsed world, where the politics is covered with mud, fills of dark tejemanejes and of governments in the shade. The reality of a few facts that it overcame the fiction. The Argon fiction tries to emulate the reality with the dramatization of the facts. Ben Affleck, like the director, manages to do a believable, intense history, full of suspense and emotive. The history is narrated between, basically, three stages: the offices of the CIA, the studies and surroundings of Hollywood and Iran. Each of them quite differentiated. Tidiness, clarity and order for the first one. Warm tones for the movie industry; and for the action that develops in Iran, the use of a movie with more grain and an obvious movement of the camerawoman who believes tension (between other technical boasting) accentuating, this way, the realism.
The tape is not exempt from a few touches of humor that relieve the dramatic load. Especially that it comes from the role that play the duo of the producing veteran Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin) and the rewarded make-up artist John Chambers (John Goodman), friend of Toni Méndez. The interpretation of both is haughty. They contribute agility and they are the managers of giving the support to Argon and making her believable so that the plan is a success.
Ben Affleck is questioned like actor, for its recent interpretations. Its interventions in popular movies have taken him, ideally, to the adjective of correct (that is as Pearl Harbor does not say anything, example, 2001). In Argon it takes, practically, all the weight. Its presence is constant. Perhaps prove to be somewhat tasteless, inexpressive. But he is fine to the role. It is the one that does not have to lose the nerves and the one that has to convince its adventure partners of that the farce is possible. It saves with notable merit its interpretation and gains many reputation in its director's roll of the tape. It is another good example after those of Clint Eastwood or George Clooney (who here also appears like producer). It is its third movie (after its Farewell, kidling, farewell, 2007 and The town, 2010) and it will be necessary to be attentive for the next appointments.
Three points of standing out and a snag. Outstanding they are: on the one hand, the setting of the epoch (ends of the seventies and beginning of the following decade); for other, the balanced share-out, with not so well-known actors looking for the similarity with the real persons on whom the movie is based; and finally, the brilliant sound-track of Alexander Desplat. The snag: the search of the happy end. I refer to that of proper actor Toni Méndez in its personal conflict. We know nothing about its wife and the motives that have taken him to its current situation, but there is the happy end (or happy end, that would say other) that nothing seems to arise of. It is more than open to criticism.
Finally, a very good movie narrated with intelligence, entertained, which the suspense maintains to the maximum creating a brilliant, tense and emotive climax. A tape that narrates the history of a normal man, Toni Méndez, who acted of extraordinary form fulfilling a mission. An anonymous hero for almost twenty years, until the CIA, by order of Bill Clinton, discredited the roles of the history from how Toni Méndez, after two months of the assault, saved six diplomats thanks to the fact that it made the parked bicycles. Joshuah Bearman, journalist, wrote an article about the epic of Méndez, and years later Chris Terrio prepared a script on the base of this article.
Go to the movies, ah and remain until the end. Along with the credit qualifications there are appearing a few images that are of being grateful. Reality and fiction to the unison.
