Barbarian and Nicolas they are known in a video shop. They establish an affectionate relation. Fruit of this love Nicolas proposes to Barbarian to have a son. The gestation of this baby will put upside down the life of the young people. Not everything is a happiness with the arrival of the baby. They begin a big one it ventures that it will need to invest a lot of efforts. Based on the novel homónima of Eliette Abécassis.
Once again we are before a universal argument: boy meets girl. Finally: the love. In the end all the movies have to do with that, with the love. If he is not like a protagonist, it is like an exposition: to do a movie is a love act. Good that I get involved, me descentro and separate from the sense of this, to make a comment of A happy event.
Barbarian (Louise Bourgoin) prepares its doctoral philosophy thesis on Tractatus de Wittgenstein. Nicolas (Pio Marmaï) dreams of being Tarantino while it is employed at a video shop. Suddenly he feels attracted by a client, Barbarian, and establishes a curious dialogue by means of the qualifications of the tapes (original and very entertaining, a pity that they happen of form so rapid that scarcely you have time to read the qualifications). Until a good day they begin going out together.
Barbarian she is much marked by the relations that it had with its parents. Its father left them to a few years. Its mother had to take her charge and of its sister, while it was more concerned of smoking marijuana, in its crazy youth, which of its education. It weighs him that she could commit the same errors as its mother Claire (gratifying interpretation of Josiane Balasko, the affectionate concierge of The hedgehog). It does not also help him very much to see Nicolas's relation with its mother, a very absorbent and meddlesome woman.
When does everything start? The question is an appellant that the protagonist does to herself. When does the love begin? In this first glance in the video club? In the first appointment? In the first kiss? In the first one «do I love you»? And: when did its life put itself upside down? When did he say that yes to Nicolas's desire to have a son? When do they make love? When does it give birth?
There are many questions those that one raises Barbarian. Nobody has prepared him for the maternity. But especially nobody has prepared him for the changes that take place in its life since it put itself to the task of having descent, both in the physical and hormonal changes and, especially, in how fond of the couple relation this process. Barbarian it will have a struggle, not only internal, which will maintain divided between the love the newborn baby, its couple and the sensation of having lost its freedom, its independence, for the sake of the maternity.
The men we do not go out very well stopped in this tape. The vision is, across the experience, of a woman, Barbarian, a philosopher, intelligent, attractive, that suffers, feels, endures and lives through its pregnancy. Next to you Nicolas, certain grade of immaturity, reading of cómics addicted game does not contribute to the video very much in the task. But he cannot do it better. They have not also prepared him for him to give birth a baby. While it cries, shouts and suffers its couple in the maternity ward he does not know what to do, I go away: no!, I remain: no! What do I do? In the end: are we so different? Do we understand the men the women? Are we so simple and foreseeable?
Rémi Bezançon, the director of A happy event seems that he proposes a clash between the simple of the man and the complex of the woman. But also it does it on having faced the balance at the time of the capture of a decision on having a son. He praises the contras: from the physical changes of the woman in the gestation (he puts on weight, discomfort, hormonal swaying), existential doubts (health of the fetus, pain in the childbearing) more existential doubts (epidural, episiotomía) depression I postset off, in the nights in sail, to give the breast, the sexual lack of appetite, the rejection of your couple, the interfering of the mother-in-law; and in another plate of the scales: the smile of a baby. It is an a little horrifying exposition, according to its end that is not different that raising from a point of view different from the used one, what a son means to bring to the world. A point of view, five-peseta coin, realist and that it usually conceal, removed from vision idealistic that reigns on the event "happy" to give birth.
The director (coauthor of the script) obtains an intense story with certain dramatic load in those difficult moments but that opposes them with a few brilliant touches of humor that impregnates happiness and infects us. The history is constructed in two quite differentiated parts. The first one corresponds to the infatuation, to the ideal thing, to the sleep of the perfect love. Nothing importunes the couple to them, they prove to be happy, eat up to kisses, he travels, they enjoy the love and, therefore, the life to the unison. The technical resources to achieve this are based on one take care of esthetics with brilliant colors that personify the passion and with dynamic camera movements. The gestation of the baby supposes a point and apart. The physical and hormonal changes of Barbarian the trastocan. With Lea's birth, there comes the chaos and the disorder that takes possession of everything. The treatment of the image, in this second part, becomes more realistic, with less showy, subdued colors. There are blurred, rapid scenes with short planes that help to create tension.
Barbarian it will experience many changes in its life. A synthesis of all of them is its doctoral thesis. Its work was centring on Tractatus de Wittgenstein (British nationalized philosopher who died in 1951) a complex work of difficult analysis. The arrival of the baby trastoca its plans, it does not center on its investigation and its desk populates more of books on babies that treated of philosophy. The Tractatus alludes, between many other questions, to which every element in the language has only one name, there jousted everything opposite to what she lives. A baby not only is neither that, nor a man, nor a woman. Nothing of that. In the end meanwhile I make uneasy Barbarian it will pass to the novel, leaving aside the philosophy to center on its own experience. It will give birth: A happy event, a more vitalist and subjective work.
It is not an alarmist movie. When you go out of the movies you mention that as a future mom should come to see the movie, it goes out running. Nothing of that. Nobody is going to change criterion on having seen the tape. The one who is still to give birth, will give birth (with pain or without pain, but he will give birth). A happy event questions the relations with our fellow women (not simple at all), the couple relations (much less) and the decision to be parents (ugh!) . All this is on the point of exploiting when Barbarian and Nicolas they decide to have this baby. Lea's arrival makes the stability of the couple stagger and it seems that prop is not sufficient the love. But A happy event does not stop being a sweet and sour comedy that reflects the most intimate mesenteries of the maternity without mufflers, of natural and effective form that shines with proper light. Actors' good share-out with a nice and powerful image of Louise Bourgoin accompanied by an attractive Pio Marmaï that they get on on the screen. She sweet and landfall; he good boy but something immature with turned out more than convincing. Also there is very meritorious the role of Josiane Balasko, built good (this crazy youth, this abandonment) and interpreted good. Significant the sound-track that it intones in a perfect way and also the elegant photo is outstanding. And all this prepared with very good dose of acidic and brilliant humor (he praises the scene where a doctor says to him to Barbarian after the childbearing that it has a good perineum and she cries of emotion «it is the nicest thing that they have said to me in the last months»). Franco-Belgian agreeable and fresh production.
I leave a tráiler to you
