If someone of ours young followers does not know what this lady (Lucera Tena) has in the hands and what makes dream, it is not another thing than a few castanets.

The castanets or toothpicks, there are a wooden, percussion musical instrument known by the Phoenicians it does three thousand years. Thanks to the commerce and the sociocultural exchange, they expanded quickly to the countries of the Mediterranean, like the current Croatia, or the southern Italy, and others, like Slovakia; although Spain is the country that better has preserved them, developing its use, and in the XXth century the Franco period turned them into a national instrument, like also the Spanish, classic or Flemish guitar.

At present there are many professional castanets soloists; although Wagner, in 1845, already wrote for castanets the Venusberg music in Tannhauser.

Six courses are necessary to obtain the mastery of this instrument and to practise every day an average of 7,8 hours arduously the rhythmic one and the sensitive tact. These are used so much how for Fleming as for traditional dances of the Spanish folklore. In many countries of Latin America, and in Portugal, also they are used in its folklore.

Local variants of the castanets exist in Asturias, Gallicia, Cantabria (Balearic) (Tarrañuilas), Aragon, Ibiza and in La Gomera and The Iron (Canaries), receiving in these last two cases the name of pouches.

The pollopas are plastic castanets. It is a castanet much hit in its relation quality – price, thought for beginners who do not want to spend a lot of money, or for children. Its price is about them approximately 10 Euros and the most expensive and/or from better quality they can come up to approximately 550 euros in houses of international fame for concert and from manufacture to exclusive order of the client.

Internationally acquaintance has been the soloist of Barcelona José de Udaeta (1919-2009). Also its disciple José Luis Landry. Other outstanding names: Bright star Tena, Emma Maleras (creator of a learning method for concert castanets), Carmen de Vicente, Inma González, Consol Grau, Montserrat Carles, Bethlehem Cabanes, Teresa Laiz and Mar Bezana.
