COMMENT

The movie starts with an image impactante. A scene a little seen lately, but of big visual impact and that we surprise. It raises you of the seat. It is a big achievement.

You that you would do if, in the days before to your programmed summer holidays, one of your best friends is deposited of gravity in a hospital and its state is very critical? Would you suspend the due holidays?

The Ludo friends face this question. They are men and women, small French bourgeoises, who have exceeded the about thirty. Married, ennoviados or it on the verge of stopping being.

One of them is Max. A man who has triumphed in the business. He has a good hotel with a famous restaurant and this has given him a status that does not ever conceal it. He is the protagonist of a seriocomic plot of big level. Whenever it appears in scene it provides a lot of game. Ludo is the personage on whom it turns the script, but on the one that turns the action he is Max. About Max turns everything. Egoist and alone tyrant looks for its hotel, its ship, its house. It is neurotic, cynical, perverse and maniacal. He believes that it is possible to buy the friendship. The confession of its friend provokes that he feels unarmed and tortured. Its wife, Veronique, practises of good counterpoint. It maintains he cries out it although what Max does is, frequently, desquiciante. She is, to a certain extent, manipulative and bossy.

Vincent is a sensitive man and good father. He lives tormented through the fault of its sexuality. Or, rather, through the fault of feeling and of saying one of little truths that are said in the movie: he feels something more than friendship for Max. For being coherent with this feeling it unleashes an alluvium of seriocomic situations. Its wife, Isabelle suffers the consequences of Vincent's doubts and only it turns out to be relieved resorting to the silence and to the cybernetic sex.

Marie (represented by a big performance of Marion Cotillard) is in a constant cloud helped up by the document tubes that he smokes. It has moments of big lucidity and can tune in to its friends. It has other relations out of this group in search of the love, the happiness and does not hesitate to try this and that one, man or woman minor of race. And this way it uses the sex for its satisfaction. It compensates so many apparent frivolity with the voluntary action in some exotic country by means of some ONG. Towards the end of the movie he will have to pay a toll for this freedom.

Other who such dances him is Eric. Immature, insensitive and senseless. We go a niñato that is the typical philanderer. It has a fiancée and devotes itself to cheat it as soon as it can. But at the moment when he feels that she moves away it is capable of covering 650 kilometers to say to him that he wants it.

Antoine also makes a show of an insecurity that it puts of the nerves to the rest of the friends. He lives installed in the adolescence and it is unable to take a decision without consulting each and everyone of the friends to know if it is right in sending a message to its ex-. Nevertheless, to leave the friend in the solitude of the hospital it did not have any doubt.

And, finally, the good sense and the ripeness come from the hand of a big man, of Jean Louis. There is the friend that they have in the beach. It is the one that can take them for the holiday life. And the one that will put a sanity point in its lives.

Ah, and one forgot me. We have left Ludo. We know little about him, but it seems the craziest and a weathercock of all of them, and, perhaps, be able to be the most coherent of all (it is not important for him to plant a kiss to a girl who has just known in spite of its friend is there ahead).

I leave this scheme to you to see as the relation of the friends works.

The director of the movie, Guillaume Canet, is giving us tracks as the tape is advancing. And it does it in an intelligent way. The dialogues work of marvel. The comical situations the son and the dramatic arts also without falling down in the easy tear. The music is too clear. They are clear and know the songs (too much) and they are heard and "see" very much, which reduces his points. Nevertheless, one of the topics that appear and that constitutes a pleasant surprise is the song that proper author Maxim Nucci interprets (like Franck) and that goes for title “Talk to me”. The scene at once reminded me to Caetano Veloso in the Almodóvar movie “Speak with her” singing the wonderful version of “Cucurrucucú Paloma“. It is sure that the Gallic director has had it in all that and especially the good reception that Almodóvar has in the nearby country. And since we speak about inspiration insurance that also it has been the movie “Peter's friends” of Kenneth Branagh. Curiously the translation to the Spanish of “Talk to” comes to be “to speak with me”. Its director cannot have had better skill. The movie tries to speak that thing about, to say what we want, to extract what we have inside and to express our feelings with the persons who love us and surround us. They all are defending themselves with small minor lies not to pull the blanket and that the whole filth goes out to the surface. “Small minor lies” it is counted from the heart. And that is evident. I have had opportunity to see recently “The prime beautiful thing” in which also protagonists are the feelings and in which harder scenes appear but that they come less to the heart.

“Small minor lies” (They petits mouchouirs, Guillaume Canet, 2010) is a movie on the friendship, the love, the fondness, the tenderness. It is a movie on the fear and the insecurities to live through the life planned on the map of the human miseries. This one presents the economic crisis (but it does not play an important role) and also the night life with its revelries, drugs and up to the sexual ambiguity that in any moment ballasts the dynamics of this group of friends. It is curious that when more you live together with your couple or family that is usually in the summer epoch is when more ruptures and rows take place inside the bosom of the couple or family. And Small lies it tackles these situations obtaining a big result.

Several things can stand out: The study that the director has done on the personages, the initial sequence, the almost perfect conjugation of drama and comedy. And, for me, the scene of the final hug between Max and Vincent (as for dramatic art) and that of two alone friends with the stranded ship (comic). And, of course, the song “Talk to me” interpreted by proper Maxim Nucci (in the Franck role).

It was possible to have avoided or improved: Some of the musical topics and the ending of Ludo (it turned out to be somewhat forced to me and, slightly believable).
