Cousins movie of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo

Cousins together

As a good plural way we try to give capacity to all the opinions. Today we offer the Cousins' comment from a double point of view. For some the last movie of Sánchez Arévalo is a good appointment, while for others it is a fiasco. The best thing is that one judges himself. We leave them with a comment of Luis José Cuadrado and other of Cristy G. Luxuriant. Go to the movies and decide.

Every time I am sure to come to see more a movie as virginal as possible as for the previous information about the same one. In this case it was enough to me to know that the director, Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, is the same who directed Azuloscurocasinegro (2006) and the most recent Fat persons (2009, which certainly was an object of a comment on the same pages).

This way I avoid to come to the room with big expectations of seeing a good movie if the criticism like that has judged it or on the contrary, I am going to see a movie that perhaps had not gone if the criticism is unfavorable. This can sum up in that one of that one who waits for nothing that it does not lose hope.

A comedy has a lot of risks, a Spanish comedy we can multiply these risks by two. A good comedy is cousins. And there is not disappointed with him that one that comes to the movies with the disposition to see a fresh, luminous, happy movie, and in enough moments entertained that flees of the topics of the humor. An entertaining movie and this is not necessary to forget it: the movies is the industry of the entertainment.

Of what does it go Cousins?

Days have made Diego (Quim Gutiérrez) planted before celebrating its wedding. And there is left, with half of the guests, on the foot of the altar the day that was going to celebrate its wedding. He has to make something more than be sorry. And this way with the help of its two cousins, José Miguel retired military sickly and young (Adrián Lastra) and Julián commercial (Raúl Arévalo) capable of selling a tractor to the very same John Deere, he decides to go to Quotation marks, the people where there fell in love with Martina (Inma Cuesta) its first love, its first fiancée. And from here on a trip begins in search of the love of each of the personages.

Comment

The comedy Primos takes as a plot line the history of Diego and its fiancée Yolanda (Nuria Gago), who panic detainee decides not to marry. Diego, stupid young man who is thinking about having the love of its life, but who with this mishap does not know if really he loves or not a person. And more doubts will bring in him on having met its ancient fiancée Martina. José Miguel has not appeared any more that to do what its fiancée Toña (Alice Rubio) says to him. It does not see beyond its only eye, only it sees for her eyes. But soon he will realize that this is not what he wants in this life. On the contrary cocky Julián, loquacious, seductive to blow of fluency more that for its physicist, it is had by everything, money, house and work. But he lacks the love. In its trip it meets an ancient girl who now has turned into an explosive woman, Clear (Clara Lago).

This is a personages' comedy, with a good script and a few fresh dialogues. The performances of the different personages are unlike. Its main protagonist Diego does not convince me at all. I have not just got into its personage. Neither it helps its role. Doubtful, somewhat ingenuous and slightly superficial. The rest they act, as a whole, over the average. There stands out Julián's vain one, the soul of the cousins. Happy, cheerful, witty. Very convincing. Also the performance of Antonio de la Torre (Bachi) is outstanding a father who has lost the course worried by the bottle and who sometimes proves to be lucid (it makes the most of the opportunity to refer to movies with the information of year, the director, actor, etc. thanks to the task that it fulfilled in its ancient video shop). In the feminine side the beauty of Inma Cuesta buries the rest of its partners. They it can already be right, which they do it (Egg white and Nuria) but its beauty is an imam and for there that our eyes go, behind her. Were you looking for me at the nipples? He asks Diego. And I answer (in this scene) since yes. Its kind air, its calmed performance, puts a calm point in Diego's life and in proper tape.

After the Fat persons movie, the director Sánchez Arévalo decides to extract the scene to the street. He has confessed that he needed it. For nothing desmerece of its previous movies and it does a bet risked in this genre with the danger of its good reputation being loaded. Perhaps for that reason it do not surprise to find us us, in the credit qualifications, with a few curious dedications (in the movies it is necessary to stay until the end of the credit qualifications, I joust when they already come from the broom to gather the room for the next meeting). And since I have said earlier, the movies is an entertainment and to me Cousins since it entertained me. A loutish movie, romanticota and full of light with a few affectionate personages.

Cousins, simple comedy

Primos is the most personal movie of Daniel Sánchez Arévalo (Madrid, 1970), as this way he has defined it himself. The director, of Cantabrian origin, has rolled this refreshing comedy in the Quotation marks people. Sánchez Arévalo has directed several shorts: Goal (2002), Express (2003) – with which he became presorted for the Oscars - Physics II (2004), The fault of the mountaineer (2004) – that it presented in the Mostra of Venice – and Punish (2007). Its most famous full-lenght film is the brilliant movie Azuloscurocasinegro (2006). Like scriptwriter, it is necessary to point out its work in series of television: Duty chemist (1995) and Central Hospital (2002 – 2003) and in other movies (in addition to the proper ones), like The foreign evil (Óskar Santos, 2010).

The argument is the proper one of a typical current comedy of dessert and the fundamental idea, from my point of view, it is the defeat of the personal relations for commitment, of those who drive to the isolation and to the routine.

Diego (Quim Gutiérrez) has been left by Yolanda (Nuria Gago), its “fiancée of the whole life”, five days before its wedding and there does not occur to him another thing to be presented in the church if she repents. Nevertheless, its cousins Julián (Raúl Arévalo) and José Miguel (Adrián Lastra) convince him to go to the holidays of its people and this way, to be able to forget her. In Quotation marks, Diego tries to recover Martina (Inma Cuesta), its first love, now single mother. The dilemma arises when Yolanda appears again, apologizing to him for its adventure with a dentist and announcing to him that is thinking about being pregnant, what later turns out to be a “false alarm”. Next, a series of situations happens that they do that Diego remembers the good moments of its adolescence and takes the decision to return along with Martina.

In my opinion, the movie is a simple comedy to which only they save some scenes as the following ones:

The first one, when Diego waits before the altar for its dear, mobile one in hand, while its cousin Julián makes him repeat hundreds of times “I do not want it” and José Miguel drinks alcohol until he faints.

The Dani scene, the son of Martina and José Miguel mounted in the boat pirate: The last one takes the reins of its life and decides to leave its fiancée, Toña, with the one who had an almost maternal relation and had turned him into a frightened and hypochondriac boy.

The last scene is, undoubtedly, the best and the used humor is distant enough from the one that we have seen along the whole movie, a quite grotesque humor, sometimes, male chauvinist. Diego's return along with Martina while all the rest protagonists eat about a field table and finally she reproaches him to have compared him with a sobao pasiego and he adds: "It is the first thing that exists pillao”.

Behind the comical face of the movie, there appear other situations of major dramatic openwork: The addiction to the alcohol of “The Bachi” (Antonio de la Torre); the prostitution as route of survival of its daughter (Clara Lago) and the solitude of Martina, who, up to the reunion with Diego, has lived overturned in its son Dani.

The mistake is to have remained only in an initial exposition: There had been much interesting a better treatment and deepening of these situations and “not to spend them for high place” disguised of thank you foreseeable and, sometimes, absurd. In this sense, the movie remembers to blue Days (Miguel Santesmases, 2006), rolled also a people of the north of Spain (in this case in Ferrol, A Coruna) that reflects histories unfortunately real of a group of young people throughout a summer (traffic accidents, drugs, not wished pregnancies), edulcoradas for very valuable comical notes.

With regard to the actors, we must emphasize the excellent performance of Antonio de la Torre (Malaga, 1968), usual in the movies of Sánchez Arévalo. Its naturalness and its versatility at the time of diverse types of personages interpret do of him an actor of the first line. Much remembered it is its role in Azuloscurocasinegro (Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, 2006) and in others as: The meadow of the stars (Mario Camus, 2007), A word of yours (Angels Gónzález – Sinde, 2008) or Fat persons (Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, 2009).

As conclusion, a simple and very light romantic comedy is Cousins. In spite of the good share-out of actors and of the tenderness that its personages reflect, these prove to be little prepared (Diego) or to too much exaggerated (José Miguel), with forced dialogues and up to absurdities. This time, the big director Sánchez Arévalo has been wrong.
