The books firefly – Instructions to save to the world
THE BOOKS FIREFLY
IX International award of Novel Emilio Alarcos Llorach
Leticia Sánchez Ruiz
Publishing house Algaida
Its back cover gives us a brief critique:
A library burns in half of the night. Fifty years later brilliant Ulises Font begins an unusual search. Felipe, who has spent the life to himself hoping that there should happen to him things that never happen to him, it returns to its people for the esperpéntico burial of its grandmother. It was shining, a writer who does not publish, lives shut up in a house of red bricks and writes stories for Yaws, which is its world and its teacher. These histories are interlacing in The books firefly, across a mysterious plot that in every chapter formulates new questions and strange games.
It has good face it was me who had thought, but but it is because they put me on its track it would be one more of these innumerable books that every year are published and happen, regrettably, without sorrow or glory for the literary panorama. Well it is true that it comes with the fringe of an award. It is already known that the less resounding the award is the more quality can have the work. Without despising, of course, the big ones, to Top Ten of the millionaire awards, which literature of the rewarded works answers to other interests.
The proper authoress defines its work as a novel with three very different stories. «A love story, other one of search and other one of one of these sad men who want to do the revolution and end up by putting a bar».
This is curious of it of the men who want to do the revolution and end up by putting a bar. I usually read the books with a role and pencil nearby to note down things that I like. And this way, at the end of the reading, I throw a revision to these notes. Curiously in The books firefly the notes start with the page 58: "I am one of these sad men who wanted to do a revolution and end up by opening a bar”. Bony that I caught one of the ideas with which the authoress has mounted a beautiful story.
Writer Leticia Sánchez handles very well the description of the ambiences: "A glasses bar, before opening, has the same depressing aspect as a mattress without sheets. Deserted and ghostly. Still there floats in the ambience the smoke of the cigarets of the previous night and the acidic smell of the crowd.” (page 451). It knows very well the human relations: "The worst thing that can happen to you in the world is not that you wake up and that the person who sleeps next to you says to you that it already does not love you, the worst thing that can happen to you is that they never go so far as to love you …” and it knows very well the creative process that surrounds the writer and even gives us some advice in Borges words:
“: do you know what Borges says?
The Yaws voice interrupted Lucía and its mother in the bath and brought it again there to Cardiff, on the verge of raising a serious topic.
– What men and the stars return cyclically? – he answered That It was Shining.
- very well, yes, that also says it. But listening – yaws began to read with that haughty voice, as of old English actor, who was setting whenever it was going to recite the exact words of another person-. At first every writer is baroque, conceitedly baroque, and after the years it can achieve, if the stars are favorable, not the simplicity, which is not at all, but the modest and secret complexity.”
Briefly and as another summary of the work less aseptic than the facilitated one in its back cover. One of the histories, the main one, is that of two brothers, heirs of a bookseller of old man, who makes great that are not seen. Other one of the histories is the one that contributes the love in the novel, the salt, the pepper, the guts we go. A girl meets boy. It is the basic thing, what must not be missing. It was shining it meets a lady of importance who shares table and tablecloth with cremates of I cremated of the Spanish society. But it has a fiancé, Pian, who turns into its obsession. And another history has to do with an adolescent who cannot separate its life of the Antía, its grandmother.
I like how it is written, I like the fresh, free, poetical style of the young and promising writer ovetense. The histories are interlaced in short chapters. It will not be me who reveals what is a book firefly. I cheer up to its reading and that each one discovers it. I hope that you should like.
And I end with another appointment if the previous ones have not caused your attention:
“Yaws had repeated to him often that it was not possible to fall down in the vulgarity of which you liked anything that the whole world liked. It was necessary to remove in the strange thing, it was necessary to refine the tastes, that the whole world liked a piece it was only a symptom of its vulgarity.” (page 199)
Of a new writer we pass to the consecrated one.
INSTRUCTIONS TO SAVE TO THE WORLD
Point of Reading
Of what does it go?:
Four immersed personages in the apocalyptic modernity of a big metropolis will see how its destinations cross. A cabdriver widower who does not overcome the loss of its wife, a disappointed doctor, an African prostitute stuck to the life and an old scientist lead this urban novel, on a vertiginous background of serial killers, mistresses sadomasoquistas somewhat slovenly and small prodigies.
A history of hope, a tragicomedy that moves between the humor and the emotion. An intense and hypnotic novel from the first one up to the last page.
Namely it is not a book of self-help as its title could suggest. Regrettably, or thanks to God, we come to the world without an instructions book and there is the one who thinks that that's why we have to suffer experienced as we work before different experiences. That one of essay and error.
In its work Rosa Montero it paints the portrait of the current, modern world, in which we live. A more and more sophisticated world, with more mass media to our scope but in that it has fitted the solitude, the isolation, the prostitution and up to the terrorism, presents in each of our daily acts. Its authoress has said: "We live with the sensation of being at the edge of the Apocalypse, with a vague catastrophic feeling. When there are no crazy cows, it is the avian flu and but the climatic crisis. Frightful things spend the whole moment up to the point that seems that this goes to finish. Sometimes they give you desire of saying that they give birth to the world a moment”.
The histories that you tell us the protagonists are a history common in common places, nothing of another world, and, therefore, they touch us the fibre of a way or other one. Matias is the cabdriver widower who does not overcome the death of its wife. Daniel is a disappointed doctor of the life that goes up to the point that dives in another virtual world with the same result. Fatma is an African prostitute and Brain is a scientist, back of the world, full of frustration. There is the one who says that these four personages look like many people to the four that lead its previous work History of King Transparente (Alfaguara, 2005). In this occasion the action develops in the Middle Age, but the parallelisms seem clear. I have not read this work but it has left so good mouth flavor to me that I will try to read it.
Finally, I want to emphasize three brief paragraphs:
“But now, after so many years of sleeping together every night, sharing the supreme intimacy of the perspirations and the flatulences, that old love was buried under geologic layers of rancor and of sorrow.” (Page 101)
“And, nevertheless, there was an epoch in which its bodies were ungidos of value and of intention. Days in which to see a Marina nipple was an Epiphany.” (Page 122)
“It seemed to the doctor that, in Marina mouth, the phrase vámonos to house was remaining stained by an equivocal and obscene intimacy. I am not going to do what she says, he thought. I am not going to give up. But it was too tired and inside its head tears were raining. What more gives, it was said suddenly, feeling that the will was escaping from him. And then he got up and allowed to behave, with too many docility, to the apartment that he was sharing with its enemy.” (Page 155)
Read to me a little, that does not cost money, it entertains very much and does not give heat.
