The sacred real fact

Exhibition: The sacred real fact

Reclining Christ of Gregorio Fernandez

The Department of Culture inaugurated last July 5 in the National museum School of San Gregorio an exhibition that is preceded of a splendid international reception, after its presentation in National Gallery of London and National Gallery of Art of Washington. The sample is formed by a series of works, essential and intense, which re-constitute the subtle relation that was united in the XVIIth century between two arts sisters, the painting and the sculpture, which were collaborating and competing between themselves, with a big technical virtuosity, to capture with amazing realism the catholic topics. The result was a sensual, brilliant and complex art, to the service of the spread of the faith.

The sacred real fact constitutes an exhibition of reference, for the beauty of its works, for re-constituting the dialogue and the rivalry between sculptors and painters of the XVIIth century, for contextualizar the imaginary Spanish Catholic in an ambience as sensitive as that of the devotion and the rituals, and, finally, for its persuasive teatralidad, which inspires in the visitor reflection and surprise. But, also, it offers a wider breath, on having registered in the contemporary interest in the Baroque, which maintains a very living echo in the criticism and in the creation of the present.

It is undoubted that one of the suitable spaces for this sample is the renewed National museum School of San Gregorio, of Valladolid, which possesses the main collection of Spanish sculpture and owes its prestige to the value of its sizes of the golden Century. The presence of sacred real fact in the Palace of Villena — head office of the temporary exhibitions of the Museum — reaffirms the new stage of an active, open and demanding institution, which proposes to stimulate new investigation fields, spread the knowledge and encourage the appreciation of the art between the Spanish citizens.

Six big topics gather the ideas of the exhibition: the mutual dependence between painting and sculpture and the confusion between artistic image and miraculous vision; the exaltation of the saints and its mystical legends (it salts 2), particularly favorite some of the popular devotion, like San Francisco of Asís and the mysterious find of its body (it salts 3); the cult to the scenes of the Passion, treated with a cruel violence (it salts 4); the mystical delight (it salts 5); and, finally, the dark pathos of Christ's death (it salts 6).

The sacred real fact is in the Palace of Villena. It is necessary to stand out, like one more element of the exhibition, the excellent assembly. In an intimate ambience, in half-light, the weight of the silence heightens the quality of the presented pieces. Scarcely there are 26 magnificent works. The vision of reclining Christ of Gregorio Fernández is sobrecogedora. It is necessary to be grateful to the direction of the museum for this disposition that they allow to the visitor to contemplate from you to you you work them. A wise move and an unrepeatable opportunity.
